The Auverland A4 AVL (Armored Vehicle Light) is an all-terrain, air transportable, high mobility, modular, lightweight, armored vehicle developed to meet the requirements of the French Army. The crew compartment as well as the engine have been protected through the addition aluminum and steel plates with thickness ranging from 6mm to 10mm. Modern military operations demand a high mobile, liaison vehicle such as Auverland A4 AVL.
The 4x4 Auverland A4 AVL vehicle can accept roof-mounted weapons and a wide range of modular payloads to fulfill different mission requirements. Despite its small size, the vehicle can accommodate up to seven people but typically it will carry only three. The roof hatch as well as other equipment are provided as vehicle options.
On September 16, 2004, the French Armaments Procurement Agency (DGA) selected the Auverland A4 AVL for the Petit Véhicule Protégé (PVP) or Protected Small Vehicle program. A first batch of 314 vehicles valued at €40 million ($48 million) was ordered with first deliveries and entry into service expected in 2007. The PVP program is aimed at procuring up to 933 vehicles worth €108 million ($135 million) for the French Army. In early 2009, the PVP program was aimed at delivering 1,500 vehicles by 2015.
Gavial is a version of A4 AVL vehicle with minor modifications being offered to the German Army. It may serve as a 4x4 command and liaison vehicle matching GFF family of command and multipurpose vehicles requirement launched in 2005.
